At Robertson + Easterling, we watch people walk into our office carrying lives that feel impossovably heavy—marriage problems, fear about the kids, tangled finances, guilt, shame, anger, and the pressure to hold everything together. Most people think the goal is to somehow lighten the load, to make things hurt less, fast.

But here’s the truth:

Some burdens aren’t meant to be adjusted, tolerated, or softened. They’re meant to be put down.

A British-born Zen master, Houn Jiyu-Kennett, taught this bluntly:

make the burden feel so heavy that the student finally lets go.

Not because they’re weak. But because carrying it isn’t sustainable.

That’s not far from the spiritual reality many of us already know.

Trying to control every outcome of a broken marriage will grind a person to dust. Clutching resentment, fear, or certainty that you alone can fix the past—it’s like holding a boulder and insisting it’s your responsibility to carry it mile after mile.

At some point, the weight becomes its own teacher.

And the lesson isn’t “be stronger.”

It’s “stop fighting physics.”

Letting go isn’t quitting.

It’s the only way forward.

When your marriage ends—or even when you’re trying to save it—you can’t force outcomes. You can’t engineer someone else’s choices. You can’t white-knuckle your way into peace. Life doesn’t bend just because we want it to.

The Zen approach is shockingly practical here:

The burden teaches you by exhausting you.

Until you quit pretending you have limitless power and accept your actual human limits.

That’s where freedom starts—not in control, but in release.

Not in pushing through, but in finally exhaling.

If you’re in the middle of divorce or wrestling with decisions that feel impossibly heavy, you don’t need someone to make the burden lighter.

You need someone to tell you the truth:

You don’t have to carry this anymore.

You can put it down.

And on the other side of that release?

Clarity. Calm. A path you can finally walk without breaking under the weight.

If you’re ready for that conversation, we’re here.
